COCONUT CREEK, FL – On August 8, 2023, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) hosted the U.S. Department of Commerce for a town hall event celebrating the one-year anniversary of the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act.

“The CHIPS and Science Act is creating good-paying Florida jobs and ensuring that America can succeed on the world stage. I was proud to vote for this historic, bipartisan bill during my first term in Congress,” said Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick. “By unlocking private sector investment and enhancing STEM opportunities, we will drive South Florida’s economic growth for generations to come.”

The town hall included remarks from representatives from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Broward College, Florida Atlantic University, and the National Science Foundation. Following remarks, the town hall event featured a resource fair, where attendees could learn more information about local careers in STEM and innovation.

Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick also announced roughly $3 million in grant funding for Broward College as part of the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program. This funding ― awarded by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) ― is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Internet for All initiative that aims to connect Americans with affordable, reliable high-speed internet service.

Broward College received funding for its “Connecting Broward-UP Communities (CBC)” project, which seeks to promote broadband adoption, access, and capacity at the college and ensure all residents in targeted communities have access to broadband service.

“In today’s day and age, high-speed internet service cannot be a luxury only available to a select few,” added Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick. “This federal funding will help Broward get online, particularly in communities that have often been left behind.”
