WASHINGTON, D.C. – On July 30, 2023, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick applauded Kenya’s commitment and leadership to spearhead a multinational force in Haiti.
“Only Haitians can dictate the future of Haiti — this much-needed assistance provided by the Republic of Kenya will allow Haitians to do just this. Although this announcement comes months later than many of us had hoped, I am grateful that a multilateral intervention is proceeding,” said Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick. “I have consistently been advocating for an intervention for over a year, as this remains the most effective solution to restore order and address chaos on the ground. I hope that Haitian authorities and the U.N. Security Council accept Kenya’s offer so the insecurity and humanitarian crises facing the Haitian people can come to an end. I also look forward to hearing more in the coming days about how the U.S. plans to support the multinational intervention and lend a hand to our Caribbean ally.”
In March, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick helped introduce the Haiti Criminal Collusion Transparency Act, a bipartisan bill which recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives in a unanimous vote. It would require the Secretary of State to submit an annual report to Congress regarding the ties between criminal gangs, as well as political and economic elites in Haiti. The bill would also impose sanctions on parties involved in such criminal activities.
Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick ― the only Haitian American Member in Congress ― proudly serves as a permanent member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, a co-chair of the Haiti Caucus and is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus’ Haiti Working Group.
