TAMARAC, FL – On May 10, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick introduced legislation that would designate the post office located at 1900 West Oakland Park Blvd in Oakland Park, Florida, as the Alcee Lamar Hastings Post Office.
“Congressman Hastings was a tireless fighter for South Florida families, and it’s only fitting that a post office named, in his honor, be at the heart and center of our district,” said Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. “I hope that this recognition will leave a lasting legacy in a part of our community that was deeply close to him. While there will always be a huge void to fill with Congressman Hastings’ absence in Congress, we will carry on his spirit of perseverance and steadfast commitment to serving others.”
The legislation is currently co-sponsored by several other members of the Florida congressional delegation, including Reps. Darren Soto (D-FL-9), Frederica Wilson (D-FL-24), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-26), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL-27), John Rutherford (R-FL-5), Kathy Castor (D-FL-14), and Maxwell Frost (D-FL-10).
Congressman Alcee Hastings served 15 terms in Congress, first entering the U.S. House in January 1993. His successful election marked the first time an African American was elected from Florida since the Civil War era. While in Congress, Hastings became the first Black Chairman of the Helsinki Commission and served as the dean of Florida’s congressional delegation. Hastings passed away on April 6, 2021.
