WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 26, 2023, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick voted against the Default on America Act.

“Instead of solving problems, House Republicans are holding our nation hostage and demanding that their ransom be met, said Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. “Speaker McCarthy’s brinksmanship is dangerous for working Americans.  There will certainly be an opportunity to debate the GOP’s right-wing policy proposals down the road, but doing so at the expense of the American people through gamesmanship is reckless and irresponsible.”

By refusing to act now to prevent a default, House Republicans are threatening an economic disaster that will devastate everyday Americans in Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

In FL-20, an extreme MAGA Republican default on our debt would:

  • Threaten the retirement savings of 99,000 people near retirement

  • Put Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Affairs health benefits at risk for 289,000 people

  • Jeopardize Social Security payments for 88,000 families

The Default on America Act harms communities across the state:

  • Threatens access to food assistance for 58,000 people aged 50-55

  • Eliminates preschool and child care for at least 17,600 children

  • Make college more expensive for at least 474,400 students

  • Increases housing costs for at least 29,500 people
