WASHINGTON, D.C. – On April 11, 2023, U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick ― Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus’ Diversity & Inclusion Task Force ― joined 240 members of Congress in filing a congressional amicus brief in the case Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, et al. v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, et al.
“We are going backward as a society by stripping away the reproductive rights of women and people across the country,” said Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick. “A federal judge in Texas with regressive views alone cannot decide the fate of women and families. These medicines often provide life-saving care for women and grant people the freedom to choose what to do with their bodies. I will not stand idle as women’s rights continue to be infringed upon. Today and every day, I stand with House Democrats in their fight to protect reproductive freedoms.”
The amicus brief reinforces that FDA’s determination that mifepristone is safe and effective followed a rigorous process prescribed and overseen by the legislative branch. It also states that invalidating FDA’s actions would reduce access to safe abortions, exacerbating an already significant reproductive health crisis.
The brief’s signatories include Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. House Committee on Energy & Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler, and Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Diana DeGette and Barbara Lee.
In January, Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick joined Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) to reintroduce a resolution condemning attacks from extreme Republicans on reproductive rights and reaffirming their commitment to advancing reproductive justice and judicial reform.
