Frederick Croen’s photographs from 2020-21 reflect a year of introspection, reimagining, and transition—a year of limits and opportunity. Instead of traveling, the artist stayed close to home and changed the way he looked at his photography. It became a year of discovery where he found a richness in state and county parks, natural areas, beaches, and hiking trails that he had not previously visited. He traversed areas with magical names like Loxahatchee Slough, Grassy Waters, Riverbend Park, Coral Cove, Cypress Creek, Loggerhead Park, and Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. These areas offered social distancing, solitude, and peace; they allowed for quiet reflection, as well as physical activity. They also offered inspiring vistas for photography. Croen reimagined himself as a tourist in his own backyard and the images he took reflect the introspection and solitude of the year.
